Brief about cfd

The Swiss NGO cfd (The Feminist Peace Organization, www.cfd-ch.org) is a peace and development organisation working towards gender equality, the empowerment of women and participation of women in conflict resolution and peace building efforts. cfd engages in the following sectors: prevention of sexual and gender-based violence (SGBV), income generation and social and political inclusion. We are independent of political and religious affiliation and oriented towards a vision of a good life for every human being, regardless of gender, ethnic background and religion.

In international cooperation, cfd is fostering long-term partnerships with local non-governmental organisations in the Middle East, the Maghreb and South-Eastern Europe.

Background

As noted by the CEDAW Committee in its latest 2019 concluding observations for BiH, there is a low percentage of women and girls who choose non-traditional fields of study and career paths. The Committee also noted with concern the barriers to access high-quality education at all levels faced by girls who are victims of child marriage, gender-based violence and trafficking, Roma, rural, refugee and asylum-seeking girls, and girls with disabilities. Recalling its general recommendation No. 36 (2017) on the right of girls and women to education, as well as target 4.1 of the Sustainable Development Goals, the Committee recommends that BiH encourages further diversification of the educational choices of girls and boys and enhances the accessibility and quality of education for all children and addresses the disproportionately low enrolment and completion rates at all levels of education among vulnerable girls.

Evidently, these impediments for girls to access high quality education affects their access to equitable employment.

Taking into account these observations by the CEDAW Committee, cfd conducted a mapping study in BiH with the aim to identify the most pressing needs and target groups of girls and women affected by this problem. The study showed that girls and young women who have completed formal education and are looking for employment are not publicly recognized as a special category of vulnerable population. Because of that, the responsible actors fail to take any action and they do not collect any statistical data and information that would serve as the basis for planning of the support measures and programs. On the other hand, it is evident that this category of the population faces problems in further education, professional development, job search and ensuring a livelihood for themselves and their families. As a result, a large number of these girls

do not see any prospects and leave Bosnia and Herzegovina, while others live in difficult circumstances, being unable to continue their education and find work.

Taking into consideration the above analysis, cfd is looking for project proposals from civil society organisations in BiH that aim at improving the situation of girls and women from marginalised groups who drop out of schools prematurely or complete education but have difficulties becoming employable. The project should be based on a Human-Rights Based Approach (HRBA). Furthermore, cfd is looking for innovative and sustainable approaches in the field of women’s empowerment and education aimed at employability of women and girls belonging to the target group.

Organizations being able to demonstrate the following experiences are particularly invited to apply:

  • Demonstrable experience in projects and activities of education, professional development and employment of girls and young women
  • Capacities and resources for conducting vocational training and employment mediation activities
  • Work in the field of gender equality or women’s organizations
  • Experience in working with young people
  • Capacities for conducting needs analysis and identification of the target groups
  • Interventions that combine GBV approaches with economic empowerment (for example employability)
  • Experience in integrating peace-building components in their work and a cross-ethnic approach are assets
